Driving Sustainability: Dubai’s Remarkable Achievements in Environmental Preservation and Economic Growth

Dubai has made remarkable achievements in terms of achieving the goals of environmental sustainability and environmental preservation, and enhancing leadership in the fields of sustainability, innovation, and creating the future, through several means, including reusing resources, increasing the efficiency of energy use, reducing waste and reducing emissions to participate in the fight against climate change, in compliance with the directives and vision of the leadership. Al Rashida is adopting the best international practices in the field of the circular economy to achieve economic growth in parallel with protecting the environment, and to consolidate Dubai’s position as the best city in the world to live and work, within a comprehensive system to support the sustainable economic development strategy in various sectors.

In this context, DEWA has adopted a comprehensive strategy to encourage innovation in waste management, provide practical solutions to environmental challenges, adopt sustainable behaviors in all its sectors, and enhance awareness among its employees and customers of the necessity of caring for the environment and preserving natural resources.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said: “In accordance with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve the highest rates of environmental conservation along with achieving strong economic and social development, The Authority places a high priority on supporting the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050 for the Emirate of Dubai to provide 100% of energy production capacity from clean energy sources by the year 2050. We are proud of the Authority’s contribution to reducing net carbon dioxide emissions in the Emirate of Dubai by 19% in 2022 compared to 2010, which supports achieving the goals of the strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.”

He added: “DEWA’s strategy for the circular economy constitutes a comprehensive framework for determining the Authority’s directions towards expanding the scope of current applications and adopting the best international practices in supporting the circular economy in a way that contributes to achieving economic growth in parallel with protecting the environment, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources, and emphasizing the elements of rational dealing with natural resources.” To achieve the best possible benefit for it,” stressing that with the ongoing preparations for the country to host the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Expo City Dubai, the Authority is intensifying its initiatives and activities to promote the adoption of the circular economy model and its applications in the Authority’s various sectors. Encouraging community participation in achieving sustainable development, which represents an important component of the success of the efforts made in this direction.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is working to achieve the goals of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, through a wide range of projects and programs that contribute to accelerating the transition towards zero-energy buildings, and establishing a sustainable model for energy saving that supports economic growth without harming the environment and its resources. The Authority cooperates with the Emirates Green Building Council and various government and private agencies, to support its essential role in Dubai’s success in achieving a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

As part of its efforts to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in managing energy use in its buildings, and to continuously improve energy efficiency, the Authority has implemented many energy efficiency projects and initiatives to rehabilitate its administrative buildings, energy conversion stations, production stations, and water pumping and storage stations. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority achieved a major achievement in improving the efficiency of energy and water production by 37.78% in 2022 compared to 2006, equivalent to a total reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 82 million tons.

The rehabilitation included replacing old cooling and air conditioning systems with other high-efficiency systems, replacing low-efficiency lighting units with high-efficiency LED units (more than 81 thousand lighting units), installing sensors to control lighting, installing water savers, and delivering treated water for irrigation. Green spaces, in addition to photovoltaic solar panels installed on the roofs of the Authority’s various buildings and parking lots.

These projects achieved total savings for the Authority during the year 2022, estimated at approximately 52 gigawatt hours of electricity and 2.5 million gallons of water, which is equivalent to saving 22.76 million dirhams and reducing 20,899 tons of carbon dioxide. In addition, starting from March 2020, the Authority transformed its customer happiness centers into 100% self-service centers, becoming the first government institution to allow its customers to conduct all their transactions themselves using smart devices in the customer happiness centers.

In March 2021, the Authority received a stamp (100% paperless) from the Smart Dubai Foundation, in recognition of the Authority’s success in completing the digital transformation of all its operations and services by 100%. As part of its vision as a leading sustainable and innovative global organization committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has provided smart machines in a number of its buildings to recycle plastic containers and aluminum cans. The authority currently has two smart recycling units at its main center and the Warsan building.

Since the installation of the smart machines in October 2022 until the end of the first half of 2023, the authority’s employees have recycled 299.99 thousand plastic bottles and aluminum cans, which were used to produce T-shirts and other products through a local company using sustainable manufacturing solutions.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is organizing the “WETEX and Dubai Solar Energy Exhibition 2023” as part of its 25th session from 15 to 17 November 2023 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. It is a major event on the agenda of global sustainability events, being the largest in the region in the sectors of energy, water, green development and sustainability. and related sectors, and one of the largest specialized exhibitions in the world.

Your path to the COP28 conference

On the occasion of World Energy Day, which falls on October 22 of each year, the Authority launched a campaign under the slogan “World Energy Day: Your path to the COP28 conference.” The campaign included a series of virtual lectures in Arabic and English for a large number of government and private educational facilities, attended by 11.23 thousand students, both male and female, to introduce the Authority’s sustainable projects.
