Newly released drone footage provides a stark, bird’s-eye perspective of the destructive fire that tore through the North Union Apartments in Midvale, Utah, on Friday, July 31. The footage, captured by the Unified Fire Authority, highlights the immense scale of an incident that displaced hundreds of residents from 220 occupied units.
As emergency crews responded to the property just before 8 a.m. that morning, active flames and thick smoke were already visible from the exterior. According to the Unified Fire Authority, burning debris fell from the roof as firefighters rushed to secure the scene and ensure an evacuation of the structure.
Infrared Technology Maps the Deep Heat of the July Blaze
Further visual documentation released by local safety officials utilizes infrared technology to expose the true severity of the structural damage. As reported by FOX 13 News, the infrared drone footage captured bright yellow and orange markers pinpointing the hottest areas of the blaze, which ravaged nearly the entirety of the building’s fourth floor.
According to officials, the fire originated in the roof directly above the building’s sprinkler system. From there, the flames extended into a trash chute and the ventilation system, allowing the fire to spread across the upper levels of the complex.
Evaluating the Property Value and Ongoing Resident Recovery
Built in 2022, the North Union Apartments held a market value of almost $60 million prior to the incident, according to Salt Lake County records. The destruction left hundreds of tenants without permanent housing, with displaced residents initially directed to find temporary shelter at a nearby school.

Since the fire, officials have permitted residents brief periods of time to return to the property and retrieve items from their damaged homes.
