Drought, Kompatscher signs water saving ordinance – Chronicle

BOLZANO. The president of the Province of Bolzano, Arno Kompatscher, signed the ordinance for enhance water savings and coping with the long drought season that has hit the province.

The ordinance recommends all water users, and in particular agricultural users, as well as managers and owners of gardens and parks, to use water resources “economically, sustainably and effectively and limit consumption to the bare minimum. The managers of public aqueducts are also called to provide a rotation of water withdrawals particularly high and to inform its users, including swimming pool managers or owners of large gardens.
Fruit growers and vineyards, due to the severe water shortage, will have to activate anti-frost irrigation only in case of absolute necessity. The ordinance prohibits any type of artificial snow.

The ordinance was forwarded to the municipalities, which see to its publication and supervise compliance with the prescriptions in the field of drinking water supply, and to the forestry stations, which supervise compliance with the prescriptions on agricultural irrigation and communicate any contraventions to the Office of Sustainable Management of Water Resources. Checks on water diversion are intensified with regard to the permitted diversion period and observance of the prescribed minimum vital flow.
