In a new attack on the already damaged energy infrastructure, Ukraine’s largest private electricity company, DTEK, said on Friday that its three thermal plants had been attacked by Russian forces. “The equipment was severely damaged… After the attack ended, electrical engineers immediately began repairing the damage,” she wrote on Telegram.
Ukrainian electricity distribution company Yasno said this week that DTEK had lost about half of its production capacity after Russian drone and missile attacks.
For its part, the Ukrainergo electricity grid operator reported on Friday that Russian attacks with drones and missiles hit thermal and water plants in central and western Ukraine.
“Last night, the Russians struck energy facilities again in a massive, complex attack,” the company wrote on Telegram. She added, “Thermal and hydroelectric power plants in the central and western regions were damaged.”
Targeting the fuel and energy sector
Ukrainian television announced that explosions were heard in the regions of Ivano-Frankivsk and Khmelnitsky, as well as the city of Dnipro, coinciding with the detection of Russian cruise missiles in Ukrainian airspace.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian army commander said, “The enemy launched a powerful missile and air attack on the fuel and energy sector in Ukraine, using various types of missiles and attack drones.”
Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galoshenko also said that electricity facilities in the Dnipro, Petrovsk, Poltava and Cherkasy regions were also attacked. He continued on Facebook, “Electricity generation facilities were targeted by drones and missiles.”
The Ukrainian army stated that its air force destroyed 58 attack drones launched by Russia last night out of a total of 60 drones, along with 26 out of a total of 39 missiles.
Local officials said Russian forces attacked infrastructure in the Kamyansky district near the city of Dnipro. They added that at least one person was injured.
Violation of Polish airspace
For its part, the Polish army announced an increase in its airspace monitoring operations, days after a Russian missile was launched towards towns in western Ukraine, which flew over Polish territory for 39 seconds.
The Army Command explained on the “X” platform at the time that for about forty seconds, “Polish airspace was violated by one of the cruise missiles launched by the Air Force (…) of the Russian Federation last night.”
She added, “The object flew in Polish airspace over the village of Ocerdo (east), where it remained for 39 seconds,” noting that military radar devices monitored the missile throughout its flight.
She continued, “The Polish army is constantly monitoring the situation on Ukrainian territory and is on alert to ensure the security of Polish airspace.”
Following this incident, “all necessary measures were taken to ensure the security of Polish airspace. Polish and NATO aviation were also activated, among other measures.”
