DUBAI, 4th June, 2020 (WAM) — Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has affirmed its commitment to promoting sustainability, biodiversity and environmental protection.

This came in a statement by His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, on the occasion of World Environment Day, which is being held this year under the slogan #Beat_Plastic_Pollution.

Al Tayer said that World Environment Day is an important occasion to remind us that we all share one planet, and we are all responsible for facing environmental challenges, preserving our natural wealth and resources, and enhancing biological diversity. The UAE realized early on the importance of protecting ecosystems and was among the first countries in the region to pay great attention to protecting the environment and addressing the consequences of climate change by adopting green policies and launching pioneering initiatives in this vital sector. At the world level, which reach achieving climate neutrality, in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, and his brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, to adopt future plans It combines the protection of the environmental and climate system and the achievement of the highest rates of economic sustainability and societal well-being, in a way that supports the strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, which represents a national engine that aims to reduce emissions and climate neutrality by 2050, and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050 for the Emirate of Dubai to provide 100% Energy production capacity from clean energy sources by the year 2050.

His Excellency Al Tayer added: In the year of sustainability in the UAE, and with the ongoing preparations for the country to host the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) at Dubai Expo City this year, we are intensifying our efforts to promote the country’s pioneering model in sustainability and action. environmental and climatic. In this context, 800 megawatts out of 900 megawatts of the fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex have been operated ahead of schedule. The current production capacity of the complex, which is considered the largest solar energy complex in one location in the world, is 2,327 megawatts using solar photovoltaic and concentrated solar energy technologies, and its production capacity will reach 5,000 megawatts by 2030.

Al Tayer continued in his statement that the authority is implementing pioneering projects, including the green hydrogen project, and the water energy technology stored in the hydroelectric station project in Hatta using clean energy, in addition to projects to increase energy efficiency, and within the framework of its social responsibility, the authority launches awareness initiatives and programs to involve all members of society. In achieving sustainable development and reducing the negative impacts resulting from wrong practices harmful to the environment, the authority has been crowned with many local and international awards in recognition of its unremitting efforts to preserve the environment and natural resources and full compliance with all international, regional and local specifications and standards, in addition to protecting biodiversity and using the latest Integrated environmental management methods, circular economy, recycling and others.
