Durango Among Mexico’s States with Highest Fetal Mortality Rates

According to data from the Estadística de Defunciones Fetales (EDF) issued by INEGI, Durango ranks among the Mexican states with the highest rates of fetal mortality relative to its female population aged 15 to 49.

Nationwide, the statistical report shows that the overall rate of pregnancies ending in fetal death reached 58.9 per 100,000 women of childbearing age.

State-level breakdowns from the INEGI registry reveal distinct geographical disparities across the country. San Luis Potosí reported the highest rate nationwide with 81.3 deaths per 100,000 women aged 15 to 49, closely followed by Mexico City (CDMX) at 81.0, and Durango sitting close behind at 80.2 per 100,000 women. In contrast, the lowest rates across the country were registered in Oaxaca at 25.7, Campeche at 29.5, and Sinaloa at 31.1 per 100,000 women.

Primary Risk Factors and Medical Causes

The INEGI data indicates that complications arising during pregnancy due to maternal factors, alongside complications during the actual work of labor, accounted for 45 % of all fetal death cases.

Regarding the timing of the losses, statistics show that the vast majority of fetal deaths occurred prior to delivery. Specifically, 80.5 % of cases happened before birth, while 18.3 %, during the labor and delivery, with the remaining 1.2 % left unspecified. When examined by gestational age, intermediate fetal deaths spanning from 20 to 27 weeks made up the largest share at 39.0 %, followed by late-term deaths at 28 weeks and over with 32.7 %, and early-stage losses between 12 and 19 weeks accounting for 28.2 %.

Demographic Breakdown and Delivery Methods

The statistical registry also provides detailed breakdowns concerning the nature of the pregnancies and the methods of extraction. The overwhelming majority of recorded fetal deaths involved single pregnancies, representing 93.6 % of the total, while twin or multiple pregnancies accounted for 6.1 %.

In terms of the physical procedures involved in the expulsion or extraction of the fetus, spontaneous vaginal delivery was documented in 55.8 % of the instances, whereas cesarean sections accounted for 18.3 por ciento. Categorized by the biological sex of the fetus, male fetuses comprised 52.9 %, female fetuses made up 37.3 %, and 9.8 % of the cases left the sex unspecified.

Neighboring and regional states also demonstrated notable statistical clustering. Coahuila registered a rate falling within the broader tier of 50.1 to 65 defunciones per 100,000 women of fertile age, sharing similar metrics with entities such as Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Jalisco, and Querétaro.
