THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the country’s longest-ruling president, announced Monday that he is leaving politics following an early general election following the resignation of his government.

Rutte, leader of the conservative People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy or VVD, announced his decision following a hastily staged parliamentary debate.

“Yesterday morning I made the decision that I will not be available once more as the leader of the VVD. When a new government takes office following the elections, I will leave politics, ”he indicated.

Rutte’s four-party coalition resigned on Friday following failing to agree on a package of measures to limit immigration.

No date has been set for the elections.
