Between March 14th and 24th, São Paulo is the stage for one of the most important design events in the world: the 13th edition of Design Week. Also known as DW!, Design Week is an urban festival that, for more than a decade, has aimed to promote design culture and its connections. To this end, its programming includes architecture, urbanism, art, decoration, education, technology, business and other themes of the creative economy. Considered the largest design event in Latin America, its programming is distributed across seven physical districts, with more than 200 events taking place in 130 different locations.
This year, the festival’s concept, which translates into its visual and graphic identity and its programming, is inspired by the invisible waters of the city of São Paulo. The metropolis has a vast network of rivers that are often forgotten and, in many cases, hidden beneath concrete. “More than a theme, thinking about these invisible and essential waters in São Paulo has an educational and constructive approach that connects to the festival’s universe of themes, such as design, urbanism, architecture, art, creative economy, innovation and technology. In this edition, DW! invites you to find other perspectives on the city, its spaces, its stories and natural resources, proposing a reflection on the future”, comments Lauro Andrade, creator and CEO of DW! São Paulo Design Week.
Thus, the “invisible waters” served as a starting point for architect, graphic designer and educator Maria Claudia Levy Figliolino to create the festival’s visual identity. The inspiration also came from Brazilianness, present in the curves and vibrant colors, in addition to the work of artist and landscaper Roberto Burle-Marx. Waters are also present in the names of each of the festival’s physical districts, honoring important rivers and streams during the establishment and development of São Paulo.
The DW districts!
DW’s monumental programming! is not restricted to just one location. Its events were distributed across seven distinct physical districts. These spaces varied, ranging from a shopping center, a street, a neighborhood or even a broad region, including several participating buildings. With the purpose of truly occupying the city and exploring its particularities and unique characteristics, the districts were spread across different regions of São Paulo. In 2024, the districts are: Córrego do Anhangabaú (Centro, Paulista and Higienópolis); Córrego Água Espraiada (D&D Shopping); Córrego das Corujas (Pinheiros, Vila Madalena and Oeste); Rio Pinheiros (Shopping Cidade Jardim); Córrego do Sapateiro (Jardins, Ibirapuera, Moema and Sul); Córrego Verde II (Alameda Gabriel); and Rio Tietê (Shopping Lar Center and Norte). Since 2020, there is also the so-called Digital District, which offers online content for all audiences. Below, you can find details about each of the districts.
Anhangabaú Stream – Center, Paulista and Higienópolis
With 28 participating locations, this District was an unmissable destination in this edition. The highlight is the occupation of historic buildings, such as the Renata Buildingan iconic building in the center that underwent a retrofit process and became the official accommodation of DW!, the Brazilian Bank For Germanya century-old building that hosts the Fair at the Rosenbaum special of the Week, the Italy Buildingwhich will host BOOMSPDESIGN, an event with several lectures and conversations on different topics, in addition to Metropolis Gallery, an icon of modernist architecture that will serve as a stage for lectures, workshops and exhibitions, including the Salão Design Award exhibition, which brings to the capital of São Paulo the recipients of one of the biggest Brazilian furniture awards. Another essential experience in the district is the Design Giants Circuita project designed by Teto Casa and which invades the city with 21 giant pieces of furniture, with the aim of presenting the design in a playful and attractive way.
Córrego Verde II – Alameda Gabriel
Located in Jardins, Alameda Gabriel Monteiro da Silva is one of the most remembered addresses in the country when we talk about decoration and architecture. During the week, the numerous establishments dedicated to design prepared a special program, with exhibitions and presentations of new collections. It was there that the Official DW HQ!a space with face-to-face service for information and questions, in addition to a rich program of lectures.
Córrego do Sapateiro – Jardins, Ibirapuera, Moema and Sul
Several establishments located in the region were part of DW!, each with a special program. A highlight goes to the Artifact Exhibition 2024, created by one of the most recognized names in Brazilian furniture. Under the theme “My Place”, 12 designers were invited to create creations paying homage to personalities. Another interesting program was the Food Design Weekwhich took place at Shopping Parque da Cidade and Bioma Food Hub and featured talks, exhibitions and workshops for brands, designers and the general public.
Água Espraiada Stream – D&D Shopping
D&D Shopping is one of the largest spaces in the capital completely dedicated to design and decoration. In addition to its various stores, D&D was the stage for DW’s grand opening party! SP and presented important exhibitions in the Design Week program. The first of them is the Mostra Brasil Design Talents, focused on highlighting young design talents present in educational centers across the country. After its period in São Paulo, the items on display will be part of the Salone Satellite, in Milan, an important event focused on furniture. Additionally, the mall also features the D&D Design Collection Exhibitionmade up of pieces chosen exclusively by the store owners, architects and designers of the establishment.
Rio Tietê – Shopping Lar Center
With more than 30 years of tradition, Lar Center is the first shopping mall dedicated exclusively to design in the city of São Paulo. In addition to its various establishments focused on the most different areas of architecture and decoration, in this edition the mall brought the exhibition From object to city: design in everything, which addressed how design is present in all aspects of our lives. In one of the centers, visitors were able to appreciate the “Desmond Sofa”, awarded by the iF Design Award 2024, one of the most prestigious design awards in the world.
Córrego das Corujas – Pinheiros, Vila Madalena and Oeste
Occupying one of the busiest regions of São Paulo, this District included several establishments and was one of the most interesting destinations during Design Week. In the program, the highlight was the Museum A CASA do Objeto Brasileiro, with the exhibition “A CASA na Moda”, an exhibition that invited designers such as Lino Villaventura and Ronaldo Fraga to think about the fabrics that symbolize Brazilian culture – calico and lace – in unique and contemporary creations. Another highlight was the circuit proposed by the festival, called Lower Pinheiros Circuita tour that included visits to several spaces, such as Galeria D.Propósito Design, Plataforma 4, Dama Confeitaria, Fábrica da Dengo, Amoreira, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, among others.
Rio Pinheiros – Shopping Cidade Jardim
One of the most luxurious spaces in the capital, Shopping Cidade Jardim is recognized for its sophistication. Since 2023, the place has also had an area dedicated exclusively to design, including important furniture, tapestry, lighting and decoration establishments. During Design Week, the highlight was the programming of Fine Arts Cidade Jardimcampus of one of the most prestigious art schools in the capital which, during the festival, hosted conversations with experts and workshops that discussed, among other topics, sustainability and biophilia.
