Electronic Arts has registered a patent for a feature that promises to take character customization in games to an unprecedented level. This is an option that allows the player to create a personalized voiceover with their own voice, making each character unique.

The resource was highlighted by the portal Insider Gaming with information obtained from the patent registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The 24-page document mentions the following:

A computer-implemented method for generating speech audio in a video game is provided. The method includes inputting, into a synthesizer module, input data representing the content of speech.

This means that the game will be able to capture the player’s voice and synthesize the audio so that it can be used to dub the character. The software will allow the user to create several lines for their character, which will allow them to communicate with other players using pre-recorded phrases.

The description continues as follows:

Source acoustic features for speech content in the voice of a source speaker are generated and are input, together with a speaker embedding associated with a player of the video game, into an acoustic feature encoder of a voice converter. The acoustic features of the target are processed with one or more modules, to generate speech audio in the player’s voice.

This means that the software will also allow the player to type a message for the character to speak with their voice. In practice, it would work in the same way as the feature that allows you to create a Personal Voice in iOS 17.

Note that this feature has only been mentioned in a patent, so there is no guarantee that Electronic Arts will actually enable it in any game in the future, but it would be a great accessibility option for people with some degree of disability.
