PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns and Josh Elliott kicked a 54-yard field goal in overtime as the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Washington Commanders 34-31 on Sunday to open the season. 4-0 campaign for the second consecutive year.

Elliot also had field goals of 41, 47 and 36 yards before kicking the ball for the win that sent the fans into a frenzy.

And the Eagles remain undefeated.

But not without a hint of drama that left Philadelphia close to a surprise home loss to the Commanders (2-2) for the second straight season.

Hurts threw the ball to AJ Brown for a 28-yard touchdown with 1:28 left in regulation to make it 31-24. Instead of running out the clock and trying to win with a field goal, the Eagles left enough time for Sam Howell to drive the Commanders to the Philadelphia 10-yard line.

Washington received another help on the tying play. Brown received a penalty and the Commanders started the play at the Eagles’ 36-yard line and tied it when Howell tipped the ball to Jahan Doston as the clock expired.

The Commanders didn’t do much else with the ball in overtime. Hurts converted a fourth down that took the Eagles to the Washington 48-yard line to be within field goal range.
