Pancreatic cancer is known as a “silent” disease, because symptoms usually don’t appear in the early stages.
But researchers have identified two previously unknown early symptoms that can be watched for that help doctors diagnose the disease better.
In addition to the most common symptoms, such as yellowing of the skin and bleeding in the stomach and intestines, experts highlighted, in a study conducted last year, two warning signs of the disease, which are an increased feeling of thirst, and a dark yellow urine.
“When pancreatic cancer is diagnosed early, patients have a greater chance of survival,” said Dr Weki Liao from the University of Oxford.
Dr Pippa Corey, Consultant Oncologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, said: “Awareness of early symptoms of pancreatic cancer is critical. These findings can help doctors and their patients learn more regarding the signs of pancreatic cancer, and it is important that people speak to their doctor if they notice these symptoms.”
According to Cancer Research UK, only 5 percent of people with the disease survive more than 10 years following diagnosis.
According to the British National Health Service, pancreatic cancer is more common in people over the age of 75, and it is not common in those under the age of 40.
