Earthquake off Myanmar coast shakes buildings in Thailand

BANGKOK (AP) — An earthquake struck off the southern coast of Myanmar on Monday and was also felt in Thailand, with no immediate reports of significant damage.

The magnitude 5.1 earthquake was centered regarding 152 kilometers (95 miles) south of Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, and regarding 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface at 8:10 a.m., according to the Myanmar meteorology department.

Thailand’s meteorological department reported the quake had a magnitude of 6.0 at 8:40 a.m., saying it was felt in the capital Bangkok and nearby Nonthaburi province, some 450 kilometers (280 miles) away. from the epicenter.

The US Geological Survey recorded the quake as a magnitude 5.6.

Different agencies often have different preliminary readings for earthquakes.

Many people in Bangkok skyscrapers reported feeling the tremor for regarding 15 to 30 seconds, according to the public reporting section of the Thai government’s Tremor Observation Division website.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage.
