The human toll of earthquakes that occurred on February 6 in Turkey and Syria continues to increase: it now exceeds 50,000 dead since the announcement, Friday, February 24 by Turkey, of the death of more than 44,000 people on its territory.
AFAD, the Turkish authority responsible for managing natural disasters, reported 44,218 deaths in Turkey.
In Syria, the latest report put forward by the authorities recorded 5,914 dead in the country.
Tens of thousands of buildings collapsed without leaving the slightest chance to their occupants seized in their sleep by the violent earthquake of a magnitude of 7.8, which occurred at 4 am.
The responsibility of certain builders, who used poor quality materials or who did not respect the standards, is denounced in the Turkish media and by engineers and architects.

Several promoters were arrested in the first days following the earthquake and the government is displaying its diligence in dealing with the file.
Turkish authorities have launched 564 investigations targeting developers and entrepreneurs whose buildings have collapsed like houses of cards since the February 6 earthquake, according to Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.
