In Brisbane, the school structure of theEast Brisbane State School will soon experience a major upheaval in its 124-year-old history, in view of the work announced in the district Woolloongabba where is located the Gabba Stadium called to become the Olympic Stadium for the 2032 Olympics.

Thus – as mentioned in recent months – a consultation was carried out by the State of Queensland with all stakeholders in February and March 2023, with nearly 600 forms completed. The purpose of this consultation was to present the project under the prism of three options, all of which include a closure of the school establishment by December 2025 at the latest and a relocation of the said establishment under distinct conditions and methods.

Last week, Queensland’s Minister of Education clarified the choice of the authorities who will invest no less than 100 million Australian dollars (59.49 million euros) to enable the provision of new premises for students and their teachers.

Concretely, theEast Brisbane State School will soon settle about two kilometers from its historic locationin buildings that will be entirely fitted out in the area of Coorparoo State Secondary College. Although located on the same perimeter, the two structures will nevertheless retain their independence.

As Grace Grace notably explained, in a press release issued on Thursday August 03, 2023:

East Brisbane State School is to have new, state-of-the-art, free-standing buildings surrounded by green space.

The underused 11 hectare site is a short distance away, has ample green space, safe drop off areas and is able to accommodate the expected future growth of the East Brisbane State School community.

The current 1.5 hectare site is bordered by three main roads, has limited access to green space and limited capacity for expansion.

Despite this justification relating to the possibilities of growth and the comfort of the new space, the concerns of the educational community should persist at least in part.

The Queensland authorities will therefore have to be pedagogical in an attempt to reassure the various actors. Moreover, they will have to try to ward off criticism from part of the educational community, as well as from regional elected officials, faced with the fact that relocation results in fine of a redevelopment project Gabba Stadium aiming to increase the size of the stadium from 42,000 to 50,000 seats and to requalify the surroundings of the sports arena for the trifle of 2.7 billion Australian dollars (1.61 billion euros).
