Lent. Can you eat meat on Good Friday? What about Holy Saturday?
During Lent, believers are obliged to practice quantitative and qualitative restriction. Quantitative is about moderation in eating, and qualitative is about limiting meat. During this time, the Church allows the consumption of products such as fish, eggs and dairy products. However, it is worth remembering that during preparations for Easter, there is also strict fasting, which occurs on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday.
Code of Canon Law informs that: “abstinence from eating meat or other foods, in accordance with the ordinance of the Episcopal Conference, should be observed on all Fridays throughout the year, unless there is a celebration on a given day. However, abstinence and fasting are obligatory on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of Passion and Death our Lord Jesus Christ”
The restriction related to the consumption of meat dishes is divided into specific age groups. “The law on abstinence applies to persons who have completed fourteen years of age, and the law of fasting applies to all adults up to the age of sixty. Pastors and parents should ensure that also those who, due to their younger age, are not bound still by the law of fasting and abstinence, were introduced to an authentic spirit of penance,” we read in the Code of Congregation. Interestingly, it is not necessary to abstain from eating meat on Holy Saturday, although this tradition is cultivated in many homes.
What can you put in an Easter basket?
The blessing of food takes place on Holy Saturday. Believers then take them in baskets to church. The question of what can be sacrificed sometimes raises doubts. For example, there are beliefs that investing money will bring wealth. According to tradition, the basket should include things such as lamb, Easter eggs, catkins, bread, eggs, salt, horseradish and cake. Blessing alcohol, devices or other items is not recommended.
