Eastwood Symphonic: Jazzing Up Clint Eastwood’s Legendary Film Scores

This isn’t the first time Kyle Eastwood has jazzed up the music of his famous father’s films. But this time the 55-year-old is dedicating an entire album to the legendary director and actor. The jazz bassist and composer reinterprets the most important soundtracks for films by and with Clint Eastwood. A tribute to his 93-year-old father, as he said in an interview with dpa.

It is the tenth album by the American film legend’s eldest son. But one that was close to his heart: “This is a tribute to my father and his film scores, as well as many of the brilliant film composers who have contributed to his films over the years.”

“Calahan”, “On Order of the Dragon”, “Gran Torino”, “Unmerciful”, “Dirty Harry”: classics of film music, which the bassist brings to new life with his jazz quintet on “Eastwood Symphonic”. As he explained, the idea was to reinterpret the greatest scores of his father’s films with a touch of jazz and classical music.

Among the revisions are melodies he helped write and arrange, such as “Der Fremde Sohn” and “Gran Torino”. He always enjoyed working with his father, he explained. “I know what he wants and he knows what I want. We have similar tastes.” In 1990 he signed Michael Stevens his first composition for his father for “Rookie – The Beginner”.

The outstanding jazz bassist already worked on some soundtracks from his father’s cult films on his album “Cinematic”, which was released in 2019. But this time he has crossed his jazz versions with symphonic music. The result: free and rhythmic sounds without going too far into the strong DNA of the classics. “They wanted to change the familiar melodies while keeping them recognizable.”

“Eastwood Symphonic” is a testament to an artistic legacy, the transmission of personal passions. “At the Eastwoods, music is a family affair. My father in particular passed down my love of music, and jazz in particular,” he said. Clint Eastwood is known to be a jazz lover and pianist. He has also composed the music for many of his own films, such as Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby.

As a teenager, Clint’s son naturally envisioned a career in cinema. He took film classes at Southern California University for about two years and appeared in several of his father’s films, including Honkytonk Man. But the music ultimately triumphed: “I will always love the cinema, but the music was stronger.”

“Eastwood Symphonic” is more than a tribute. The album is a thank you to his father, who showed him what commitment and joy in his own work really mean, he emphasized.

He is now going on a European tour with his new album, which will take him mainly through France – including to Paris, where he also lives partly. Eastwood will be in Vienna on October 24th and in St. Pölten the following day.
