The urgency of these protective measures was underscored in March 2015, when a woman from Monrovia, Liberia, contracted and died from Ebola despite the country previously being declared virus-free. Her only known risk exposure was unprotected sexual intercourse with an Ebola survivor whose semen tested positive 199 days after his initial illness. Subsequent genetic sequencing confirmed a direct match between the strains, proving that sexual transmission could successfully ignite localized flare-ups long after an epidemic’s official conclusion.
