Sri Lanka to cut army in half as economic crisis deepens The government has announced that it will increase the number of soldiers to one lakh by 2030. At present there are 2,00,783 soldiers. As a first step, the number of soldiers will be increased to 1.35 lakh by the end of next year.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense explained that the change is to make the army technically and tactically superior. Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic crisis since independence. 5.39 lakh crore Sri Lankan rupees was set aside for defense in this year’s budget when there was no money to import even essential materials.
