Economic immigration on the rise in recent years in France

With its bill on immigration, the government also wants to provide a response to the labor needs of the French economy. Economic immigration has always been an essential part of the country’s growth. And the needs do not diminish.

With an active population estimated at nearly 3.5 million people in 2022, immigrant labor (i.e. foreign born abroad) occupies 10% of jobs in France, according to the latest INSEE statistics. Half work in a low-skilled and therefore low-paid profession. Certain sectors of activity would struggle to operate without immigration. This is the case for construction – immigrants represent a quarter of the structural work workforce – or in the field of services to individuals and communities (home help, domestic workers, security, etc.).
