Although all the songs for both albums (“Darkfighter” was released in June) were written at the same time, they decided RIVAL SONS to release two albums this year. “Lightbringer” is the name of the Californians’ second release and starts off rather leisurely with the song “Dark Fighter”. But only at first, because after about two minutes the guys break out and you dive into the world of good old hard rock and don’t actually want to show up anymore.
Luckily, the opener already has a playing time of almost 9 minutes, which the four guys skilfully use. With “Mercy” follows a song that is typical of her style, lots of blues, the fuzz box turned up to the max and off goes the proverbial Luzie. For me, “Redemption” is the heart of “Lightbringer.” The soulful ballad is built around Buchanan’s sensitive voice, the rest of the band is present but discreetly in the background. That’s all it takes to serve up an extremely strong ballad.
“Sweet Life” offers rock, but also has something very poppy and therefore catchy about it. Probably the reason why it is played up and down on relevant radio stations. After a short acoustic intro and slight playfulness on the guitar, “Bevor The Fire” turns into a great 70s flair rock song with a steel guitar solo and a catchy chorus. “Mosaic” closes the album a little more quietly, but with appropriate words:
„The broken pieces fit together
They fit together
They fit together
Like a way in the lines disappear
We’re only here for each other“
For me personally, “Lightbringer” is the stronger album of the two releases. The only drawback is the very short playing time of just over 33 minutes. This would have easily fit on a CD or double LP. This gives you as a listener the chance to calmly engage with the two works one after the other. And you should definitely take this peace and quiet.
