ECOWAS encourages Mali, Burkina and Niger to “prioritize dialogue”

At the end of the extraordinary summit of Mediation and Security Council (CSM) at the ministerial level held in Abuja, Nigeria on February 8, 2024, ECOWAS underlined “the crucial need” to prioritize diplomacy in the face of regional challenges. Among which is the withdrawal with “immediate effect” of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the organization.

Nigerian Foreign Minister and MSC Chairman Yusuf Tuggar said the move by these 3 countries poses another challenge to ECOWAS. “The choice of these three countries to leave ECOWAS would not only cause hardship for their populations, but also undermine regional integration efforts,” Mr. Tuggar said.

However, he hopes that through “dialogue” and “diplomacy” the dispute between ECOWAS and these countries will eventually be resolved.
