After the end of an ultimatum to the putschists in Niger, the West African community of states ECOWAS wants to discuss how to proceed at a special summit in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on Thursday. In addition to further sanctions, there is also a military operation against the state in West Africa. In Niger, the military took power on July 26, suspended the constitution and arrested the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

Under Bazoum, Niger was one of the West’s last strategic partners in the fight against the advance of Islamist terrorists in the Sahel. 15 West African countries belong to the ECOWAS confederation. Four states – including Niger – have had their membership suspended after coups. ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger on July 30 and demanded that the putschists restore the constitution. Otherwise, measures will be taken that could also be violent, it said. A corresponding ultimatum expired at the weekend. The military governments of the other suspended members, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea, have sided with the coup plotters in Niger.
