ECOWAS welcomes the outcome of the crisis in Burkina Faso

The current President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is also President of the Republic of Guinea Bissau, welcomed in a statement on Sunday evening the resolution of the crisis. in Burkina Faso which resulted in the resignation of Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, without confrontation between the military units.

“On behalf of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, I salute the various parties in Burkina Faso for having accepted a peaceful settlement of their differences,” Embalo said in a statement.

“I take note in particular of the decision of Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba to resign from his functions as President of the transitional government of Burkina Faso, in order to avoid a violent confrontation and a possible bloodbath”, a- he added.

The current president of ECOWAS also “applauded” the people of Burkina Faso while inviting them to settle their differences through dialogue, and not through violence.
However Embalo declared: “I demand from the Burkinabé authorities to respect the commitment made with ECOWAS”.

He pointed out that as part of ECOWAS’ commitment to peace and stability in Burkina Faso, an ECOWAS delegation will visit Burkina Faso on Monday, October 3, 2022.

The delegation will be led by Suzi Carla Barbosa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guinea Bissau and President of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers. It will also include Mahamadou Issoufou, former President of Niger and ECOWAS Mediator for Burkina Faso and Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.

Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, overthrown on Friday by a group of soldiers, offered his own resignation on Sunday, while laying down seven conditions which were accepted by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, author of the putsch, announced in a declaration, the mediators of this crisis.

One of the conditions set by Damiba was the respect of the commitments made with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), namely the return to constitutional order no later than July 1, 2024 through the organization of elections.

Captain Traoré ensures the dispatch of the current affairs of the State until the swearing in of a new president who will be designated by the living forces of the Nation.

Traoré also met, on Sunday evening, the secretaries general of the ministerial departments whom he invited to go quickly in urgent files.

Regional and international organizations such as the African Union and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to the timetable adopted by the Summit of July 3, 2022, which provides for the return to constitutional order no later than July 1, 2024.
