Ecuador and Uruguay qualified, three teams for a play-off

In addition to Brazil, already qualified and which easily disposed of Chile, several meetings were decisive in the race for qualification for the 2022 World Cup in the Am-South zone. Appointed in place of the eternal Oscar Tabarez on December 14, Diego Alonso managed to qualify Uruguay – world champion 1930 and 1950 – thanks to a victory against Peru (1-0). A goal from Giorgian De Arrascaeta at the end of the first half gave La Céleste a third consecutive success and the assurance of accompanying Brazil and Argentina to Qatar next December.

The fourth South American qualified for the 2022 World Cup is Ecuador. The Tricolor however lost heavily (3-1) against Paraguay, penultimate of these playoffs. Ecuador, which had started off with a bang, ended less well (2 draws, 1 loss) but assured the essential: a fourth participation in a final phase of the World Cup, after 2002, 2006 and 2014. If the we now know the four qualified for the World Cup, three other teams are fighting for a place in the play-off.

Peru, Colombia and Chile: one ticket for three

Fourth and last meeting of the evening, Colombia-Bolivia was rich in goals. Liverpool striker Luis Diaz allowed the Cafeteros to open the scoring, before Miguel Borja and Mateus Uribe added to the scoreboard. Thanks to this success (3-0), Reinaldo Rueda Rivera can still hope to go to Qatar. But it is Peru who, despite their defeat, leave with an advantage. Ricardo Gareca’s troops currently occupy 5th place in the barrage (dam against the winner of the fourth round of the Asia zone).

In addition, the Peruvians receive Paraguay, poorly ranked, during the final day scheduled for Tuesday evening. At the same time, Colombia will go to the lawn of the Venezuelan red lantern while Chile will face an already qualified team from Uruguay. The last matches of the Am-Sud zone will therefore be more decisive than ever. It remains to be seen which team will manage to pull out of the game.
