QUITO (AP) — A crowd of euphoric fans took to the streets of the capital of Ecuador on Sunday to receive the champion of the Copa Sudamericana, Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, which won the regional title the day before, for the second time, by defeat Fortaleza of Brazil 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
Around 6:00 p.m., the plane that arrived from Uruguay, where the final of the South American tournament was played, landed on the runway of the Mariscal Sucre airport in Quito and crossed the traditional water arch in tribute to the team.
Alexander Domínguez, author of the three decisive saves against Fortaleza, got off the plane with the cup in his hands along with the rest of the Alba squad, who raised the flag of Ecuador.
The cold night in the capital of the Andean country did not dampen the joy of the fans who followed in a caravan the open bus in which the albos traveled to the iconic Plaza Indoamérica, near the state University Central, in the north center of Quito. There they made their first stop amidst enthusiastic fans.

“Clearly it is the most important (triumph), we brought the fifth so now let’s enjoy it,” the captain of the Quito club, Ezequiel Piovi, told the media, who thanked the fans for the emotional reception.
“We deserve to celebrate because it was a final with a lot of intensity,” mentioned the leader of the university team, Esteban Paz, who also thanked “the people who have given us so much love.”
The day before, the League won its fifth international star. He had previously reached the 2008 Copa Libertadores, the 2009 Sudamericana and the 2009 and 2010 Recopas Sudamericanas.
