Edtstadler: “Europe without internal borders demands more external border protection”

In the debate surrounding the Austrian veto once morest an extension of the Schengen area to include Bulgaria and Romania, Europe Minister Karoline Edtstadler was a guest at ZIB2 on Friday evening. There she once once more reiterated her desire for fences or a wall at the EU’s external borders – even if they weren’t pretty.

Not all asylum seekers might only come to Austria via the Hungarian border, “there must be more routes used by the smugglers,” said Edtstadler. And: “If we want a Europe without internal borders, we must protect our external borders better. The aim of the EU must be to know “who is there and we must have the power to decide who is there,” said the EU Minister.
