People with an overactive bladder (so-called irritable bladder) often feel a sudden, strong urge to urinate and have to empty their bladder often during the day and at night, sometimes involuntarily (urinary incontinence). Bladder training is often recommended for treatment. Those affected keep a diary about when and how often they go to the toilet, how large the amount of urine is and how much they drink. In addition, you should only go to the toilet at certain intervals according to plan in order to regain more control over your bladder. The aim is for the bladder to stretch more and be able to store more urine through increasingly longer intervals.1 A Cochrane team examined the benefits and risks of bladder training compared to other treatment options for overactive bladder.
