Effectiveness of Anti-Inflammatories in Covid-19: Findings from a Randomized Trial and Implications for Treatment

Anti-inflammatories did not speed recovery from Covid-19 but prevented deaths, says a new study.

A randomized trial

The effectiveness of anti-inflammatories in the treatment of Covid-19 was evaluated during the ACTIV-1 Immune Modulator clinical trial. This randomized trial was conducted on nearly 2,000 hospitalized patients with the disease in the United States and Latin America. Participants were randomized to receive either abatacept, cenicriviroc or infliximab in addition to standard care with corticosteroids and an antiviral. The main objective of the study was to assess recovery time and death rate among patients.

Mixed results for anti-inflammatories

The results obtained showed that abatacept and cenicriviroc did not have a significant effect on the recovery time and the death rate of the patients. However, infliximab was associated with shorter recovery time. It therefore appeared that this drug could be beneficial in the treatment of Covid-19 pneumonia in hospitalized adults.

Despite these promising results, it is important to note that adverse effects were observed in some participants, which require special attention. Side effects may vary from person to person.

This research contributes to understanding the effectiveness of anti-inflammatories in the treatment of Covid-19 and paves the way for future studies in this field.

What is Covid-19?

Covid-19 is a complex disease that has claimed millions of lives worldwide since its onset. Treatments for this disease are still constantly evolving and scientists are continually looking for solutions to improve patient care.

Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus have mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without needing special treatment. Some, however, fall seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with an underlying medical condition, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer, are at greater risk of developing a severe form.
