EFTA-India Trade Agreement: 16 Years in the Making

Switzerland and India have agreed on “the broad outlines of the EFTA-India trade agreement”, Guy Parmelin indicated on Saturday on years.

The Minister of Economy left the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos to go directly to India following “a last minute invitation” from his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal. “This is where we agreed, after 16 years of negotiations, on the broad outlines of the EFTA-India trade agreement,” he wrote on X.

The Vaudois does not, however, specify what the two States have concretely agreed on. The two men and other representatives of EFTA states already met in May to move the issue forward. Guy Parmelin then said he was optimistic.

An agreement with India should create jobs for Indian youth and guarantee Switzerland’s industrial position, declared the Federal Councilor in an interview published on Sunday in the SonntagsZeitung. For Swiss companies, market access as universal as possible is vital, he says.
