On January 19, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed the importance of quickly restoring the Palestinian-Israeli peace process during a phone call with his newly appointed Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.

During the phone call, Minister Shoukry stated: “Restoring the peace process is the only and ideal way to achieve this vision of peace.” two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, in order to bring about comprehensive peace and stability in the region.”

Egypt has been, is and will continue to promote peace in the region, as well as shouldering the historic responsibility for promoting peace and ending regional conflicts, the ministry said.

He stressed the importance of stopping unilateral measures that further complicate the situation and called for preserving the historical and legal status of the city of Jerusalem.

Peace talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel have been stalled since 2014.

The Palestinian side does not accept the US sponsoring negotiations with Israel since the administration of the former President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moved the US Embassy in Israel to the city in May 2018.

Jerusalem is a holy city for both Muslims and Jews.

After the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and merged into the territory, a move not recognized by the international community.
