Egyptian Bakery Division Announces Lower Bread Prices After Wheat Price Drop

Khaled Fikry, spokesman for the Bakeries Division in Cairo, said that the prices of a loaf of free bread will witness a decline after wheat prices fell by 20% to 25%.

Fikry added, in an intervention with the “8 Sobh” program on the “DMC” channel, today, Wednesday, that the Minister of Supply, Dr. Ali Moselhi, met yesterday with a number of officials and bakery owners in Greater Cairo, and it was agreed that bread prices and scales would be adhered to.

He explained that the price of a loaf of bread weighing 80 grams is scheduled to become one and a half pounds, a loaf of 40 grams will cost 75 piasters, and a loaf of 25 grams in restaurants will cost 50 piasters.

He added that during the meeting, it was agreed to conduct a monthly review of the cost of a loaf in relation to international wheat prices, and to follow up on markets and tourist bread bakeries, in addition to providing assistance to license unlicensed tourist bakeries to enter the system and increase the availability of bread.

The spokesman explained that a list will be drawn up within the next few days to take action against those who do not comply with the prices and who violate the ministry’s decisions.
