Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty called for the resumption of US-Iranian negotiations and the completion of the first phase of the US President’s plan for Gaza during talks with Austrian Parliament Speaker Walter Rosenkranz in Vienna on Wednesday. Abdelatty emphasized that concerted international efforts are required to lower escalation and return to the negotiating track to contain tensions, according to a statement from the Egyptian foreign ministry.
Diplomatic Push for Gaza and Regional Stability
During the meeting, Abdelatty focused on the necessity of implementing the initial phase of the US plan for the Gaza Strip. He stated that this step is critical to ensuring full access for humanitarian aid and establishing the conditions for subsequent phases. Cairo’s position centers on the need to return to the negotiating track to contain tensions.
The minister’s call for a resumption of US-Iranian talks underscores Egypt’s efforts to restore regional security. By linking the Gaza crisis to broader regional tensions, Abdelatty highlighted the need to contain tensions.
Migration Pressures and International Burden-Sharing
Abdelatty and Rosenkranz addressed the complexities of migration, with the Egyptian minister detailing Cairo’s success in preventing illegal migration to Europe from its coasts. While highlighting these efforts, Abdelatty pointed to the heavy economic burdens the government bears while hosting millions of refugees.
The minister urged international burden-sharing, calling for a comprehensive approach to tackle the economic and social root causes of migration.
Counter-Terrorism and Intellectual Security
The discussions included a review of Egypt’s comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of extremism. Abdelatty outlined a strategy that integrates security, intellectual, and developmental aspects. According to the foreign ministry, this approach aims to dismantle the root causes of extremism by promoting moderation, tolerance, and enhanced institutional coordination.
Expansion of Egypt-Austria Bilateral Ties
The two officials identified several sectors for deepened cooperation, specifically in renewable energy, green hydrogen, information and communication technology, education, culture, and academic exchange programmes. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening these bonds, praising the existing Austrian parliamentary friendship group for North African nations.
To further these relations, Abdelatty expressed a desire to establish a dedicated friendship group with Egypt and called for an increase in mutual parliamentary visits. Following the diplomatic sessions, Rosenkranz led Abdelatty on a tour of the historic Austrian parliament building to review the history of the country’s legislative institution.
