Eintracht Frankfurt’s athletics coach Martin Spohrer has apologized for a verbal derailment on the Internet against Hoffenheim’s professional Christoph Baumgartner. “I would like to expressly apologize for my tweet after the penalty situation in the game yesterday in Hoffenheim! Something like this must not happen to me under any circumstances and was unprofessional!” Spohrer wrote on Twitter late Sunday evening.
Baumgartner, who was voted into the eleven of the day by the specialist magazine “Kicker” for the first time this season, scored the 1-0 in TSG’s 3-1 win over Frankfurt. After Austria’s national player also got the penalty that made it 2-0, Spohrer insulted the professional on Saturday via Twitter. He later deleted the tweet. “It happened in the excitement of a penalty that I thought was provoked, but this does not justify the tweet or the choice of words, for which I once again very clearly apologize, especially to Christoph Baumgartner!” Spohrer wrote. It was initially unclear whether the club would sanction the athletic trainer.
Spohrer was not the only Eintracht participant who lost his nerve in the tenth league game without a win in a row. Head coach Oliver Glasner gave an angry speech at the press conference, for which he later apologized to a journalist. Frankfurt threatens to gamble away all goals for the season in the Bundesliga, but has a chance of winning the DFB Cup against RB Leipzig on June 3rd in Berlin.
Also because of the angry speech, the separation between Eintracht and Glasner is a done deal despite a contract until 2024, as the “Bild” newspaper reported on Monday. The only question at the moment is whether Frankfurt and Upper Austria will separate before the cup final or only after the end of the season. The club declined to comment on the report when asked. According to “Bild” there should be a crisis talk between Glasner and sports director Markus Krösche in the coming days. It should be clarified when Glasner’s time on the Main ends.
