Birmingham: Olympic champion Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson Hera became the fastest woman at the Commonwealth Games.
Hera won gold in the 100m final with a time of 10.95 seconds. Hera could only finish third in the World Championships held last month. St Lucia’s Julian Alfred took the silver (11.01) and England’s Daryl Neitha the bronze (11.07).
In the men’s 100m category, Ferdinand Omanyalak of Kenya won the gold (10.02). Omanyala edged past defending champion South Africa’s Akani Simbimne (10.13). Sri Lanka’s Yapun Abikoon won bronze (10.14). This is Sri Lanka’s first athletics medal at the Games.
