Electric cars may not be an ecological miracle, but they still save a huge amount of oil, and here is a graph that clearly shows us that.

Electric cars, China’s new fight

The market for electric cars is increasingly prolific. Everyone is getting into it, even Toyota, which had assured that it would never waste their time. Whether with Tesla in the USA or the many brands in Europe, China is no exception, far from it. If we take a closer look at the sales of electric cars, Byd is the group that just passed Elon Musk.

If you don’t follow automotive news, you can easily miss the Chinese company. However, it accounts for more than 1.8 million cars sold in 2022, against only 1.3 million for Tesla. A real rise in power for the country that manufactures the most batteries, so necessary for these vehicles. On the side of France, we can boast of being part of the Stellantis group, bringing together the PSA group and the Fiat Chrysler group. The brand sold more than 500,000 electric vehicles in 2022. The Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance, 50% owned by Renault, sold 335,000 EVs.

We are therefore dealing with a worldwide movement towards electricity, but what about the amount of oil used? Because yes, the interest of “e-vehicles” is to get rid of this resource which is seriously starting to run out. While electric cars also have environmental concerns, it’s still good news that the transportation of human beings no longer relies on a single element.

Graph: the amount of oil saved in the world with electricity

This is good news that I bring to you today, and it comes in the form of a graph. BloombergNEF is an organization that carries out global market analyzes related to raw materials and advanced technologies with the aim of moving humanity towards a low-carbon economy. In their report, they discuss the transition to electricity, and in particular the oil savings made.

this quantity taking into account all purchases of electric cars instead of petrol or diesel cars. And in addition to taking into account past data, they added an estimate on the EVs sales forecast until 2025. Here is the

in question, produced by the Visual Capitalist site:

Beginning in 2015, he separates impact from electric by type of vehicle:

  • 2/3 wheels: from 674,000 barrels saved in 2015 to 1.1 million in 2025, this is clearly the smallest increase in this graph. Indeed, small vehicles were already the most numerous to be electric. They take into account scooters, motorcycles, but not electric bicycles.
  • The buses : From 43,000 to 333,000 barrels saved, almost x10
  • Commercial vehicles: totally non-existent a few years ago, we will be at 143,000 barrels saved in 2025.
  • Private vehicles: the most obvious, the most used, this data represents well the evolution of EVs with Tesla (and now Byd) at the top of the list. From 8,600 barrels saved to 886,000 in 2025, what more can we say…
