Electric mobility: A gentle introduction

Anme has identified around ten measures of different natures, aimed at breaking down the barriers that present themselves as obstacles to the development of electric mobility. The challenge essentially arises in terms of the additional cost of purchasing an electric car but also charging stations.

The end of the thermal car in Europe, from 2035, marked a major turning point for the global automobile industry which is today riding the wave of electrification. From now on, automobile manufacturers swear by electric vehicles, which have become an obligation in one of the largest automobile markets in the world. This strategic change has reshuffled the cards for an industry in turmoil. And Tunisia, keen to be in phase with this important and decisive transformation, wishes to position itself in new value chains.

This is why the government is now eyeing this sector which offers opportunities. Although it is still early to talk about prosperous electric mobility in Tunisia, the authorities are banking heavily on its development in the medium term. Because to attract investments in electric automobile production, you must first open your market to these new products.

A solution dedicated to businesses

Certainly, in the short term, the objectives are timid: We are counting on a number of 5,000 electric cars in circulation in 2025. But efforts to stimulate demand, in general, are increasing in order to reflect the desire to do so. jump to all-electric.

Thus, measures and decisions have been taken, in this sense, to smoothly introduce the electric vehicle in Tunisia. The latest being the inauguration of the first photovoltaic station for recharging electric cars which took place last Friday at the Anme headquarters. This pilot action aims, in fact, to show the way and encourage public and private companies to carry out similar projects with the aim of covering the energy consumption of travel with photovoltaics. “Today, we have started a promotional action to encourage companies to adopt this solution for captive fleets. Any company that has a fleet of cars for professional use can request our support if it wishes to equip itself with electric cars and equip its fleet with solar shades. I believe that it is possible to operate company fleets with solar power,” said Fethi Hanchi, director general of the National Agency for Energy Management (Anme).

The mechanisms to put implemented

Responsible for this file, Anme has identified around ten measures of different natures, aimed at breaking down the barriers which constitute obstacles to the development of electric mobility. The challenge essentially arises in terms of the additional cost of purchasing an electric car and charging stations. Hanchi explains, in this regard, that the agency has looked into various mechanisms to encourage consumers to opt for electric vehicles and reduce their costs, which are often perceived as dissuasive. “We are working on mechanisms to promote electric cars in Tunisia and reduce their costs by subsidizing, for example, the additional cost.

In return, the subsidy expenses can be reimbursed through savings.

These are tools that have proven themselves for other activities such as solar heating and photovoltaics in the residential sector. So it is possible to apply them to electric cars,” he stressed.

He added that the results of the study on electric car charging pricing, which was developed by the agency, will soon be revealed.

Deployment of terminals recharge

Regarding the deployment of charging stations, considered the main obstacle to the development of electric mobility, the official said that the government has introduced the obligation to install electric terminals in the regions and certain motorway service stations or in city centers. “Today, we are in the process of implementing certain measures, including the deployment of charging stations throughout the territory. In each governorate capital, we will install at least one terminal.

There are studies which have revealed that among the barriers to the development of electric mobility is consumer anxiety regarding the availability of charging stations. This is why we are working to set up a large number of terminals across the country,” he said, specifying that the number of terminals is currently 60 and will be doubled by the end of 2024.

Asked about electric car insurance, Hanchi explained that insurers must position themselves in relation to this new product and develop an adequate solution. “The electric car is similar to the thermal car. Except that the second is made up of more elements (1,400) compared to the first (200). And that is an advantage for insurers, the risk of fire from an electric vehicle is much less than that of the internal combustion engine,” he added.

If the authorities are keen to democratize the electric car, wouldn’t it make sense to first electrify the State’s automobile fleet? For the moment, that’s too much to say. This does not prevent them from thinking about this initiative.
