Electricity in France is no longer the cheapest in Europe

In just a few months, France has gone from first to third place in the ranking of countries with the lowest electricity prices. The gradual disappearance of the tariff shield and the recent increases in the price of electricity will certainly not help its ranking.

Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the Minister of Energy Transition, made things clear: “We are going to remove the energy shield, but the price of electricity will not increase by more than 10% on February 1, and on the “the whole of 2024”, she declared Friday morning on Europe 1-CNews. Good news since the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), watchdog of the sector, had mentioned an increase of 10 to 20%. On the other hand, France is no longer the European country where electricity bills are the lowest.

Cheaper electricity in Spain or Italy

It was a source of pride, a luxury. Thanks to the nuclear fleet and the tariff shield, France was the country in Europe which paid the least for its electricity. But since recent increases in the price of the regulated tariff (15% in February, 10% in August), electricity now costs less elsewhere in Europe. “Currently, prices on the French market are rather high. The nuclear fleet produces less than previously, which pushes prices up. When we combine this with the end of the tariff shield, this leads to price increases. Today Today, we have electricity that will be rather cheaper in countries like Spain or Italy,” explains Sylvain Le Falher, co-founder of the Hello Watt comparator.

You will probably have to get used to this situation. Without a price shield, the kilowatt hour would become more expensive in France than in Germany, the Netherlands or Belgium. However, the release of this device is scheduled for the end of next year. A further increase, from February 2024, cannot be ruled out.
