Electricity. The Spanish supplier Iberdrola terminates the contracts of thousands of French customers

The Spanish electricity company Iberdrola terminated contracts of electricity supply with thousands of French customers due to the unprecedented rise in energy priceslet the group know in a letter.

Iberdrola, EDF’s biggest competitor in France, advises its customers to change supplier.

“We invite you to change supplier […] If you do not do this, you risk an interruption of your electricity supply as soon as your contract with Iberdrola ends”, writes the company to its customers.

A spokesman for Iberdrola in Madrid confirmed the termination of contracts, while specifying that the Spanish group was not leaving the French market.

A promise of low prices made impossible

He clarified that this decision concerned “a few thousand” of contracts.

“We don’t want to automatically renew contracts with existing customers, as many of them would be severely affected. It is preferable for them to opt for the regulated tariff in France”, said the Iberdrola spokesman. The operator had indeed committed to guaranteeing its customers low prices, and prefers to free itself from its inability to respect this promise, specifies France 2 .

However, he declined to say how many Iberdrola had private customers in France, but estimates put it at between 400,000 and 500,000.
