The Health Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries activated the Gulf Week for Oral and Dental Health in cooperation with the ministries of health in the member states, where it launched a media campaign that includes a set of awareness and educational guidelines through its official accounts on social media platforms with the aim of enhancing awareness of oral and dental health.
The guidelines included several tips on dental care, proper nutrition for oral health, and how to prevent diseases related to the mouth and teeth, focusing on the necessity of using a soft toothbrush, using products fortified with fluoride, and avoiding pressure on the teeth.
She pointed out that a diabetic person is more susceptible to gum disease and oral health problems, and that reducing sugar intake, brushing teeth regularly, using dental floss, and periodic visits to the dentist for routine check-ups are factors that help control blood sugar.
The guidelines indicated that people who have undergone organ transplants may be vulnerable to oral and dental problems due to the medications they take, and that treatments used by cancer patients may cause dry mouth and many dental health problems.
The Council also explained that there are effective ways to deal with bleeding gums, methods of cleaning teeth, and avoiding smoking, as it causes gum disease and delayed healing, stressing the necessity of visiting the dentist at least once a year, and using warm salt water to rinse the mouth to reduce inflammation.
Gulf Oral and Dental Health Week comes within the framework of the Gulf Health Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance awareness of the importance of oral and dental health, and to encourage citizens of the Council countries to take the necessary steps to maintain better health and a higher quality of life.
