In the Pakistani metropolis of Karachi, there was a deadly crowd at a donation distribution on Friday. According to rescue workers, at least eleven people were killed. Three children are said to have been among the dead. The nationwide rescue service Edhi also spoke of “dozens” of injuries.
The distribution of donations in the southern Pakistani city took place on a factory site and, according to the police, was not publicly registered. Giving alms to the needy is common during Ramadan. Due to the difficult economic situation in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that he would distribute flour to millions of people during the month of fasting.
Pakistan has been in a severe economic crisis for several years, which is also reflected in the rising inflation: Within a year, the prices for electricity, gas and petrol have more than doubled. Political instability and last summer’s flood disaster, which temporarily flooded a third of the country, have caused further setbacks for the economy.
