The Austrian Nobel Prize winner for literature Elfriede Jelinek has been honored with induction into the renowned French cultural order Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Jelinek’s literature contributes to “rebuilding our critical spirit through respect for universal values,” said French Ambassador Gilles Pécout on Sunday at the ceremony in Vienna. Her work “always contributes to freedom and most of all to the freedom of the weakest.”

The 77-year-old writer, who rarely appears in public and usually declines honors, spoke in her acceptance speech regarding her relationship with the French language since childhood.

Jelinek is one of the most read German-speaking writers in France. Since 2009, she has been one of the ten German-speaking authors whose books are prescribed to teachers so that they can select texts for their lessons.

Her best-known works include the novels “Indication of the Person”, “The Piano Player” and “The Lovers”. The author repeatedly addressed the role of women in society. In 2004 she was honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature.
