Tesla founder Elon Musk said on Saturday that it is important to reduce carbon emissions to preserve the planet, but oil and natural gas should not be demonized in the medium term.
Representatives from nearly 200 countries agreed last week at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) to begin reducing global consumption of fossil fuels to avoid the worst effects of climate change, signaling the beginning of the end for the oil era.
“The climate change alarm is exaggerated in the short term,” Musk said, adding that environmental action may have gone too far and caused people to lose confidence in the future.
The American billionaire said that he considers himself an environmental activist. He added that it is important in the long term for industries to reduce the amounts of carbon estimated at billions of tons that they obtain from the earth and release into the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels.
He added, “We should not demonize oil and gas in the medium term,” while speaking in Rome at a gathering of the right-wing party to which Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni belongs.
