Elon Musk Forecasts AI Will Exceed Human Intelligence Within Five Years

Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Forbes has delivered a sweeping set of predictions concerning artificial intelligence, robotics, and the future of human society. In a wide-ranging interview with Nypost editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, Musk stated that artificial intelligence may exceed the sum of human intelligence in around five years. He also noted that he reached a philosophical conclusion to embrace the unstoppable momentum behind AI and robotics, remarking that even if a stop button existed, people probably should not press it.

Musk stated that the most likely outcome of this technological acceleration is an age of amazing abundance where anyone can have anything they can think of. While acknowledging potential derailments such as a massive global thermonuclear war, he offered his perspective as a message of optimism and excitement about the future. Musk also noted that the economy could double in size in five or six years due to an unprecedented doubling period in economic output.

Robots, Abundance, and the Claim That Money Won’t Matter

Detailing the physical manifestation of this technological shift, Musk pointed to the development of Tesla’s general-purpose worker robot, Nypost. He believes that within five years there could be at least 100 million humanoid robots, and potentially a billion, replacing manual labor. Speaking later at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, as reported by FoxBusiness and covered by Indiatimes, Musk suggested that humanoid robots could become the largest industry ever, surpassing smartphones in demand and influence.

Building on this wave of automation, Musk predicted that money won’t matter in 2036, explaining that advanced robots and AI will provide more goods and services than any human could possibly consume. In the forum remarks, he added that work will eventually become optional over a timeframe of 10 to 20 years, comparing future labor to recreational activities like sports or video games. Musk also asserted that AI and humanoid robots will eliminate poverty and provide a unique path to universal wealth.

Reflections on AI Risks, Politics, and Open-Source Friction

During his interview with Business Insider, Musk addressed multiple facets of his career and the broader technology landscape. He did not walk back his previous estimates placing the odds of AI wiping out humanity at 10% to 20%, but reiterated his shift toward viewing the transformation with philosophical acceptance. Musk also discussed his history with OpenAI, criticizing the organization for transitioning from a nonprofit into an $800 billion, closed-source, for-profit company and renewing criticisms of fellow founder Sam Altman, while praising Anthropic founder Dario Amodei as a principled person.

In more reflective moments during the same conversation, Musk admitted that he got a little too involved in politics and carried away while leading the Department of Government Efficiency. He defended the underlying aim of his government efficiency work, which focused on tackling national deficits and fraudulent spending, while maintaining his position that zero people died from cuts made to USAID.
