The road less traveled. If you’re looking for a literal representation, you may want to look into the TransAmerica Trail.

It’s a cross-country motorcycle trail that stretches from the coast of North Carolina to the coast of Oregon. The vast majority of the trail keeps you off the pavement.

“It’s a trail that’s made for off-road riders, mainly motorcycle riders,” said TransAmerica Trail rider John Younger. “It travels to rural America. You’re going through very, very small towns and seeing a part of the country that not a lot of people see.”

Younger heard about the trail, put it on his bucket list, and after eight months of research and planning, decided to check it off.

“You do not know what to expect,” Younger said. “Some people do it in groups, friends. And I decided to do it solo.”

On June 27, John dipped his toes in the Atlantic Ocean as the TransAmerica Trail tradition recommends, and then hit the road — commencing on the adventure of a lifetime.

For the next month, he’d ride by day and camp under the stars by night. All along the way, he documented his trip — posting photos and updates to an adventure motorcycle forum.

“It really gave me a chance, after years of working, it was a great moment for me to just have time by myself and kind of look back at my life and and look at my path,” Younger siad.

Everything from the humidity of the southeast to the wide open plains of Oklahoma. Amazing Colorado vistas. Utah’s brilliant desert hues and, finally, the familiar Pacific Northwest landscape. John captured it all.

“Some of the moments back east, Colorado and Utah were my favorite,” Younger said.

And after 30 days of writing, soul searching and making memories, he reached the Pacific Ocean — Port Orford, Oregon.

The road less traveled comes highly recommended.

“The experience was incredibe,” Younger said.
