A fifty-year-old from Liège who was an accountant for the Intercommunal Real Estate Management Liège (IGIL) appeared on Friday before the Liège council chamber with a view to being referred to the Liège criminal court. This man is suspected of having embezzled more than 900,000 euros.

The accused has confessed to the facts with which he is accused. During a period of five years, between 2011 and 2016, he embezzled more than 900,000 euros of public money through a system of false invoices in order to satisfy his passion for gambling.

This accountant will have to answer for prevention of forgery and use of forgery. The facts had been partially revealed by the IGIL reviewer and had led to an amicable compensation agreement, without legal proceedings. It was initially a sum of 500,000 euros which was supposed to have been embezzled. But the agreement was not respected and the intercommunal company filed a complaint in 2021. The investigation then revealed an amount of misappropriation of more than 900,000 euros.

There remain questions as to why this accountant was able to misappropriate such amounts, because he did not have signing authority within the intermunicipal association. “No alarm signal was raised,” said the defendant’s lawyer, Me Maxim Töller.
