Emergency Landing on Massachusetts Island: Pilot Falls Ill, Female Passenger Takes Control

US police announced that a female passenger on a small plane took control and made an emergency landing on the island of Massachusetts, on Saturday, following the pilot had an emergency health condition.

The emergency landing occurred Saturday followingnoon near Martha’s Vineyard Airport in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

Massachusetts State Police said the pilot, a 79-year-old man, experienced an emergency while approaching his final destination.

Police said the crash resulted in a hard landing off the runway, breaking the plane’s left wing in the middle.

Authorities did not name either of the two people on board, and said they were taken to hospital.

The pilot was airlifted to a Boston hospital in a serious, life-threatening condition. Police said the passenger was unharmed and discharged from a local hospital.

The 2006 Piper Meridian departed from Westchester County, New York, earlier Saturday followingnoon.

Police said the pilot and female passenger were residents of Connecticut.

State police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the horrific incident.

State police said the plane was taken to a safe place at the airport and the accident site was being cleaned up.
