The UN Security Council will meet urgently later today on Friday to consider the situation at Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, following the Russian attack that targeted it on Thursday night to Friday, diplomatic sources said.
Diplomats told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom to the United Nations has submitted an official request to the Presidency of the Security Council, to convene an emergency session this Friday at 4:30 p.m. GMT.
The same sources specified that this session was also requested by the United States, France, Norway, Ireland and Albania.
The United Arab Emirates holds the presidency of the Security Council for the month of March.
Ukraine’s nuclear site inspection agency announced earlier on Friday that three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and two others injured in a fire caused by a Russian attack on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the most large in Europe.
Ukrainian officials have claimed that the territory of the plant is occupied by Russian forces and that its operation is carried out by Ukrainian personnel.
“The reactor safety systems were not affected and no radioactive leak was observed,” said the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, assuring that the Ukrainian authorities managed to control the fire, which broke out in a building adjoining the Zaporozhye site.
Thursday, February 24 at dawn, Russia had launched a military operation in Ukraine, which provoked angry reactions from several countries and claims to impose the most severe sanctions on Moscow.
