Ryo Lua 31-year-old driver from San Francisco (California, United States), credited the Emergency SOS via satellite for saving his and a friend’s lives during an incident in Banffa tourist city in Canada.
Em interview with PEOPLE, he said that while driving near Lake Abraham, they encountered a blizzard, causing the vehicle to overturn in a snowdrift. Stuck in the car and without a phone signal, Lu used the SOS feature on his iPhone.
Describing the process as “simple and efficient”, the driver pointed his phone at the sky, beginning to collect essential information for emergency services. “It’s the quickest way to get help when you don’t have a connection,” he said.
It is designed in a super simple way. It has very clear diagrams. You rotate the phone and it shows you where the satellite is, and when it’s in a good position it turns green. Then, you can tap a few buttons to answer questions and contact emergency services.
After the distress call, Lu and his friend had to wait in someone else’s car for two hours before rescuers arrived. Despite the blizzard, the entire process — from picking up the iPhone to being notified of a tow truck dispatched — took less than ten minutes.
Reflecting on the incident, during the interview, Lu expressed gratitude for satellite Emergency SOS and highlighted its potential to save lives in unforeseen emergencies. Today, Apple announced that it will offer the service free of charge for another year.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of being aware of such resources, stating, “You don’t think about it until this kind of thing happens, and then when it does, you get help. It seems magical that these things exist.”
