LONDON, Feb. 19 / WAM / Storm “Younes” that hit northwestern Europe left at least 16 people dead, causing extensive material damage and severe power outages, according to official sources on Saturday.
The storm began in Ireland and hit part of Britain, then northern France, through Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, before reaching Denmark and Germany, whose northern third was declared a red alert until Saturday morning.
In Germany, more than 1,000 kilometers of railway lines were damaged, according to a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson, mainly due to fallen trees, partially paralyzing trains in the north of the country.
Hundreds of flights, trains and ferries were canceled in northwest Europe due to high winds caused by Storm Yunus, which hit Europe less than 48 hours after Storm Dudley, which killed at least six people in Poland and Germany.
As of Saturday evening, 16 people had died as a result of Storm Younes: four in the Netherlands, four in Poland, three in England, two in Germany, two in Belgium and one in Ireland, according to “AFP”.
