Emirates News Agency – The Department of Energy signs a memorandum of understanding with New York University Abu Dhabi to promote energy and water sustainability

ABU DHABI, January 19 / WAM / The Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi signed a memorandum of understanding with New York University Abu Dhabi during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023.

The memorandum aims to enhance trade, economic and technical cooperation with regard to efficiency, sustainability and rationalization of energy and water consumption, and within the framework of the two sides’ endeavor to achieve long-term economic development in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The memorandum was signed by Eng. Ahmed Al Falasi, Acting Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector, and Antonios Volodys, Chair of the Department of Sustainability and Trusteeship at New York University Abu Dhabi.

The MoU contributes to enhancing cooperation and exchange of information and expertise between the Department of Energy and New York University Abu Dhabi in the field of capacity development, by calling for scientific, technical, technological, legislative and administrative cooperation in the areas of energy and water efficiency, sustainability and rationalization of consumption. The two parties will cooperate in identifying opportunities in managing the demand side. Energy and Water Efficiency, Behavioral Change, End User Consumption Measurement, Renewable Energy, Carbon Footprint Assessment, Building Retrofits, Energy and Water Resources Issues, Clean Energy Certification.

Eng. Ahmed Al Falasi, Acting Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector, said, “The MoU is in line with our endeavors to enhance energy and water efficiency by adopting new technologies and methodologies, raising consumer awareness levels, and changing their behaviors in the field of rationalization of consumption. We are pleased to put the final touches on our partnership with NYU Abu Dhabi.” And start exchanging knowledge and experiences to further develop advanced policies for clean energy and water supply chains. It is an initial step in our joint efforts to enhance energy and water efficiency, and to support our strategies for demand-side management and energy efficiency 2030, which will contribute to strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a global center for sustainability.

For her part, Dr. Mariette Westermann, Vice President of NYU Abu Dhabi, said: The memorandum of understanding between the university and the Department of Energy is evidence of the depth of the mutual commitment of the two parties to the development of the energy sector and to contribute to it in various ways, by working on new innovations and research that meet the national energy needs, but rather And global needs as well. The memorandum of understanding will pave the way for close cooperation in projects and research that are in the interest of energy transition at the regional level. It also provides students with educational opportunities that qualify them for a successful future in this sector, which is characterized by its rapid development. Commenting on the subject, Antonios Volodys, Chair of the Department of Sustainability and Trusteeship at NYU Abu Dhabi, said: “The memorandum of understanding represents an important opportunity for the university in its endeavor to cooperate with the Department of Energy on a number of projects related to energy and environmental protection, including demand management and energy and water efficiency.” and behavior change. This partnership will contribute to achieving our vision of upgrading the NYU Abu Dhabi campus to become a benchmark for all universities in the region in terms of sustainability.

Under the MoU, the Department of Energy and New York University Abu Dhabi will share and audit studies, data and statistics related to energy and water efficiency and demand-side management, in order to use them in energy balance models and other analytical studies. The two parties will work to enhance training and capacity building efforts, conduct experimental studies, and exchange data and models related to behavioral change at the individual and societal levels for the purposes of better implementation of programs and policy development.

The areas of cooperation between the two parties will also include reviewing strategies and roadmaps for technology and long-term scenarios, in addition to designing and implementing training programs and exchanging information on emerging opportunities. .
